H&MV Engineering is proud to celebrate the groundbreaking of one of Germany’s largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects, a 400MW/780MWh facility located in Gundremmingen, Bavaria.
This landmark project, developed by RWE, represents a key step in Germany’s energy transition journey, transforming one of the nation’s most historic energy hubs into a cornerstone of its renewable energy future.
A Flagship Partnership for the Energy Transition
As part of this major initiative, H&MV Engineering has been appointed as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the 380kV grid connection and BESS facility at the Gundremmingen site. The project scope includes the delivery of high-voltage infrastructure and the integration of advanced battery systems to ensure seamless connection to the grid.

Key elements of H&MV’s scope include:
- Engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of the 380 kV grid connection and BESS facility
- Civil, electrical, and mechanical works across the site
- Installation of 380kV A.I.S switchgear, 33kV MV switchgear, and associated transformers
- Integration of SCADA, protection, fire safety, and security systems
- Site infrastructure works, including preparation, drainage, access roads, and fencing
- The MV building, cable troughs and most of the equipment foundations will all be done by precast.
These systems will enable reliable, high-capacity energy storage and support the stability and flexibility of Germany’s growing renewable energy network.
Driving Progress Across Europe’s Energy Landscape
Declan Wynne, Managing Director for Europe at H&MV Engineering, commented:
“This milestone not only showcases Germany’s and RWE’s leadership in the energy transition, but also highlights H&MV’s growth, capability, and commitment to delivering large-scale energy projects across Germany, the UK, and Europe.
This project is another clear sign of what’s ahead for the BESS market in Germany – and it’s exciting to see the vision, innovation, and engineering excellence of this project partnership in shaping the future of energy.”

Supporting a Sustainable Future
The RWE Gundremmingen BESS project reflects the growing importance of large-scale battery storage in supporting Europe’s renewable energy ambitions. By stabilising the grid and enhancing flexibility, this project will play a critical role in enabling greater penetration of wind and solar energy, ensuring reliable and sustainable power for communities and industries across the region.
H&MV Engineering is proud to partner with RWE on this transformative project and remains committed to delivering world-class engineering solutions that accelerate the clean energy transition across Europe. Find out more about H&MV Engineering’s approach here.
