H&MV Engineering is proud to confirm our appointment as principal designer and contractor for the delivery of the 400 kV grid connection and electrical infrastructure for the Thorpe Marsh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) – the largest of its kind in the UK and among the largest in Europe.
This landmark project, led by Fidra Energy and backed by major investment from EIG and the UK Government’s National Wealth Fund (NWF), has now reached financial close with construction commencing immediately.

Project Overview
Located on the site of the former Thorpe Marsh coal-fired power station in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, the 1,400MW / 3,100MWh facility will be capable of exporting over 2 million MWh annually, supplying clean energy to approximately 785,000 homes. Once operational in mid-2027, it will be three times larger than any other BESS project currently in operation or under construction in the UK.
The project is a cornerstone of the UK’s energy transition, supporting the Government’s Clean Power 2030 mission and enhancing national energy security, grid stability, and renewable integration
H&MV Engineering’s Scope of Works
H&MV Engineering will deliver the full 400 kV electrical infrastructure, including:
- Installation of a 400 kV buried cable connection
- Construction of a 400 kV A.I.S substation with super grid transformers and harmonic equipment
- Site-wide electrical balance of plant (EBoP) including 33 kV switchgear, cabling, auxiliary systems, and integration with Sungrow’s Power Titan 2.0 battery and inverter technology
- Associated civil works, protection and control systems, and National Grid integration
- Full engineering, procurement, installation, testing, commissioning, and CDM responsibilities
