Women in Engineering Day: Driving Impact Through Engineering Intelligence
To mark Women in Engineering Day, we’re celebrating the talented women across H&MV Engineering whose expertise, innovation, and determination help drive successful project outcomes around the world.
Engineering is about more than technical knowledge. It is about solving problems, challenging assumptions, collaborating with teams, and creating meaningful impact. From design optimisation and project delivery to continuous learning and career development, women across our organisation are helping shape the future of engineering every day.
We spoke with four of our engineers to learn more about their experiences, the impact they have made, and what inspires them to pursue a career in the industry.
Making an Impact Through Engineering Excellence
Samadarshini T, Electrical Engineer, Bangalore, India
Can you describe a project or task where your input made a real impact?
“One project where I made a meaningful impact was during a transformer bay design review. While assessing the conductor sizing, I identified an opportunity to optimise the initially proposed 625 sq.mm aluminium conductor. By reassessing the design requirements and applying engineering calculations, I recommended reducing it to 400 sq.mm aluminium while ensuring all technical criteria continued to be met.
What stood out for me was having the confidence to challenge the design and take ownership of the improvement. Working closely with the team, the change was validated and implemented, resulting in a clear cost advantage without compromising safety or performance.
This experience highlighted how Engineering Intelligence, even at a detailed level, can create both technical and commercial value within project delivery.”
Samadarshini’s experience demonstrates the importance of critical thinking and confidence in engineering. By questioning the initial design and applying her technical expertise, she delivered a solution that improved project efficiency while maintaining the highest engineering standards.
Advice for the Next Generation of Engineers
Meabh Hourigan, Graduate Electrical Engineer, Limerick, Irelan
What advice would you give women thinking of pursuing a career in engineering?
“I would encourage anyone considering a career in engineering, particularly electrical engineering, to explore it, as it offers a wide range of opportunities and career paths. No two days are the same, and there is always something new to learn, whether that’s building technical expertise or working collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
Engineering also provides opportunities to work internationally, with qualifications recognised globally and projects located across a variety of industries and regions. This creates the potential to build a truly diverse and mobile career.
An engineering degree is highly versatile, allowing you to work across different areas, from low-voltage systems and grid monitoring to the design of high-voltage substations, as we do in H&MV Engineering.
Each role and project brings new challenges and learning opportunities, making engineering a dynamic and continually evolving profession.”
For Meabh, one of the greatest strengths of engineering is its versatility. The profession offers endless opportunities for growth, learning, and global collaboration, making it an exciting choice for those who enjoy solving problems and embracing new challenges.
Applying Engineering Intelligence Every Day
Bibiana Cabello Rubio, Electrical Project Engineer, Glasgow, United Kingdom
How do you apply Engineering Intelligence in your day-to-day work or projects?
“I apply Engineering Intelligence by combining technical knowledge with practical judgement to make informed decisions that improve design outcomes. By carefully analysing design requirements, applying engineering calculations and industry standards, and balancing both technical performance and commercial impact, I can make decisions that enhance design quality and project outcomes.
Engineering Intelligence is about thinking critically, taking ownership, and contributing to better, more effective engineering delivery on every project. This also demonstrates the important role women in engineering play in shaping high-quality and impactful project delivery.”
Bibiana’s approach reflects how Engineering Intelligence extends beyond technical calculations. It is about applying knowledge, experience, and sound judgement to achieve the best possible outcomes for clients, projects, and teams.
Finding Purpose in Engineering
Zofia Suchan, Electrical Engineer, Limerick, Ireland
What made you want to pursue a career in engineering?
“I chose a career in engineering because it offered strong long-term opportunities and aligned with my interests. I’ve always enjoyed problem-solving and working through challenges, and engineering provides a practical way to apply those skills in real-world situations.
What I particularly value is seeing the tangible results of your work. When I visit site and can see the progress being made, it reinforces the impact of what we do and makes the work feel even more rewarding and satisfying. Being involved in projects from concept through to delivery, and seeing things take shape, gives a real sense of achievement and purpose.
It’s a career that combines technical knowledge with teamwork, innovation, and continuous learning, making it both challenging and rewarding.”
For Zofia, engineering is about seeing ideas become reality. The opportunity to contribute to projects from concept through to completion creates a strong sense of accomplishment and highlights the lasting impact engineers can have on the world around them.
Celebrating Women in Engineering
The stories shared by Samadarshini, Meabh, Bibiana, and Zofia reflect the diverse experiences, perspectives, and expertise that women bring to the engineering profession. Whether optimising designs, delivering projects, solving complex challenges, or inspiring the next generation, their contributions are helping to shape the future of engineering.
This Women in Engineering Day, we celebrate the women across H&MV Engineering who continue to drive innovation, collaboration, and Engineering Intelligence in everything they do.
