Metelen 110 kV BESS

Case Study:

Project Location.

Client Challenges.

SMA Intercon required a contractor capable of delivering a battery energy storage system in rural Germany to support their commercial energy storage investment model. The project involved storing electricity purchased during off-peak periods and selling it back to the grid during higher-rate periods.

The project presented unique challenges with a split-site configuration requiring coordination across two separate locations approximately 600-700 metres apart – the 110kV AIS substation and the battery storage facility. This rural location demanded comprehensive permitting coordination with German authorities, extended temporary power solutions, and dual site welfare facilities. The client needed a design and build contractor with EPC capabilities who could navigate rural German regulatory requirements whilst delivering reliable infrastructure across the separated sites.

Our Solution.

  • H&MV Engineering is the design and build contractor delivering electrical and civil design, procurement, and construction management.
  • Delivered complete 110kV AIS substation and separate BESS facility across split-site configuration with 600-700 metre power connection
  • Coordinated comprehensive rural permitting requirements with German local authorities
  • Designed and executed HDD ducting installation alongside existing roads
  • Managed transformer assembly with Gans supervisor presence and installed complete AIS bay equipment including CT, VT, circuit breakers, and disconnectors
  • Sourced and installed modular buildings from international supplier (Croatia) for control and switchgear housing
  • Designed basement containment systems for HV cabling with acoustic walling and site-wide CCTV/lighting infrastructure
