Gundremmingen 380 kV 400 MW BESS

Case Study:

Project Location.

Client Challenges.

RWE required the delivery of a 720 MWh BESS and associated 380/33 kV substation infrastructure at their Gundremmingen site, approximately 120 km north of Munich. This project supports grid stability and capacity following the decommissioning of the existing nuclear power plant. The client sought an experienced EPC contractor capable of delivering complex works at EHV, while adhering to stringent design, quality, and commissioning standards set by RWE.

Our Solution.

  • H&MV Engineering have been appointed as EPC Contractor to deliver the full 380 kV AIS substation, cable transfer station, and grid route, along with BESS installation and commissioning to RWE standards.
  • Works include site clearance, foundations, modular buildings, underground earth grid, steel structures, and full electrical installation including 2 x 280 MVA 380 kV transformers and 33 kV auxiliary systems.
  • The BESS system comprises 104 SMA inverters, 208 CATL battery racks, and 52 MV transformers, to be fully installed, and commissioned by H&MV for grid readiness.
  • A 650 m 380 kV cable connection is to be installed from the client substation to the cable transfer station, with commissioning and energisation scheduled for commercial operation by January 2027.
